The Minnesota Office of Enterprise Technology’s web site will be the first to utilize the integration of Vivisimo’s Velocity Search Platform(TM) into a new content management system.  The project will showcase the capabilities of Velocity as well as the content management system, with the ultimate goal of indexing the nearly one million pages of state content, federated search of external web sites, and making the information available through a single search box for public-facing sites and on intranet and extranets for state employees and the public.

A current project, called License Minnesota, is aimed at providing a single point of access for nearly 600 licenses issued by some 50 state agencies.  The licenses are in five categories (business, environment, professionals, recreation and transportation), covering occupations and activities that range from ambulance services and builders to nutritionists, hunters and drivers.

Using Velocity’s search and discovery tools, the new site will offer an enhanced user experience by replacing an older site, which displayed information on licenses but forced residents to call or write for license applications. The new site powered by Velocity will allow residents to quickly find and access license applications and renewals online.

“Our new License Minnesota web site will take e-licensing up a level so that, as we roll this out, our citizens will be able to apply for or renew all licenses issued by all state agencies from one portal,” said Eileen Quam, Information Architect for the state’s Office of Enterprise Technology.

Quam, who holds a Master of Library Science, works with state agencies on taxonomies to help categorize the information on their web sites.  The goal is to provide agencies with options that range from hosting by the Office Enterprise Technology to a more decentralized model, where OET provides technical expertise for an agency that wants to more closely manage and customize search parameters for its web site.  Velocity’s flexible user-interface and features that enable easier configuration were key business drivers in selecting Vivisimo.

“Designing the look of the user interface and making choices about results rankings and relevancy - those are choices that belong under the agency and not in our office,” Quam said.

“Government clients like Minnesota are often at the forefront of implementing new enterprise search projects,” said Raul Valdes-Perez, CEO of Vivisimo.  “Whether for government, non-profit or commercial enterprises, Vivisimo helps organizations extract the maximum value from their information.”

Vivisimo’s other government clients include USASearch.gov, the main information portal for the U.S. government; womenshealth.gov; the U.S. National Library of Medicine (nlm.nih.gov); and newzealand.govt.nz.
